...A COMMON IDENTITY - Latin America
Under the leadership of regional and global coordinator Dacil Acevedo Riquelme,
the seventeen country networks of YES Latin America have capitalized on a
shared cultural identity to foster regional cooperation and exchange. Overseen by
regional headquarters in Panama, consistent reporting and information sharing has
enabled YES Latin America to develop a unifi ed marketing and funding strategy.
The results have been impressive as the region has already undertaken multinational
projects, including the Levi Strauss Relocation Project in Honduras, Costa
Rica, and Mexico, which trained over 3,000 displaced workers.
…A LOCAL CONTEXT - India
Faced with a national population of over 1.1 billion, YES India has adapted its
network infrastructure, dividing its activities among seven, independent, state
networks: Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Nagaland,
Mizoram, Hyderabad, and Tamil Nadu. As a result, YES India has been more
efficient in targeting the specifi c needs and challenges of each region, creating
employment opportunities for over 3,000 youth.
…A NEED OR CHALLENGE- Southern Africa
Faced with extreme levels of rural poverty, several Southern African networks have
chosen to rise above signifi cant cultural differences in order to collaborate on effective
rural development programs. These networks are implementing sustainability and
capacity-building projects in partnership with the Youth Development Network (YDN
- YES South Africa), led by Marlene Ogawa. Programs include The Mentorship
Program and The Entrepreneurship in School and Vocational Training Center
Program. By reaching beyond national borders, YES networks have impacted over
100,000 youth in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Namibia,
South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
