YES Middle Eastern Networks Reach More Youth with Labor Market Skills and Entrepreneurship Opportunities

Since the launch of the YES Campaign in 2002 in the Arab Republic of Egypt, three YES Networks have been launched in Egypt, Iran and Jordan.  These networks have worked assiduously at engaging young people and various stakeholders in the region to develop strategies and programs on youth employment.

Critical Skills for Egyptian Youth:  YES Egypt's most recent initiative aims to deliver new creative, in-formal educational tools targeted at youth. These tolls use the pedagogy of simulation models to teach university students skills, including interpersonal and academic skills, which are required to enter and compete in the Egyptian labor market. According to YES Regional Coordinator for the Middle East, Abdallah Sobeih, this project is designed to complement academic knowledge with the practical skills needed for the labor market.

IT Skills for Iranian Youth:  Meanwhile, the YES Iran Network is working with youth to take advantage of the electronic revolution by rolling out ten training projects entitled “E-marketing “and Tele-working” through the cooperation of the Indian Institute “Inforaksha”. To date 450 university students and graduates have benefited from the program.  Five pilot projects are currently being executed in five provinces under the title of “IT, language and communication markets for the Youth”

Market Access for Young Jordanian Entrepreneurs:   In Jordan, the YES Network is helping Jordanian youth to access gulf markets for the sale of wood handicrafts.  This venture was started by two young brothers from the YES Network to provide business development support services to young entrepreneurs manufacturing artistic wooden pieces depicting historical and tourist landmarks in Jordan such as Petra and Jerash.

For more information on these activities, contact the YES Regional Coordinator for Middle East and Northern Africa, Abdallah Sobeih at Abdallah@yesweb.org.
