THE TORCH PASSES FROM ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT,  TO VERACRUZ, MEXICO AND NOW TO NAIROBI, KENYA...
YES! It is now confirmed that Kenya will host YES 2006, in the capital city of Nairobi. Led by the efforts of YES Kenya, the Ministry of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services, the Ministry of Labor and UN HABITAT, the Government of Kenya has agreed to host the next YES global summit in the second half of 2006. YES is looking forward to holding its third global summit and expects its largest attendance to date. Over the next months, the YES Campaign will release more information regarding registration and other logistics information - so watch this space closely.

1. GLOBAL RESPONSE TO PROMOTE YOUTH EMPLOYMENT STRENGTHENED
Two major youth employment initiatives have joined forces to improve the economic prospects for young people around the world.  EDC’s Youth Employment Summit (YES) Campaign and the inter-agency Youth Employment Network (YEN) led by the United Nations, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the World Bank have launched a collaborative, international effort to harness the energy of partners and affiliates to increase employment and improve job development efforts for millions of youth.

2. YES AND YEN WORK TOWARDS NATIONAL ACTION PLAN IN BRAZIL
Recognizing the importance of the co-operation between YES and the Youth Employment Network (YEN), YES Brazil has been working closely with YEN Brazil as an important stakeholder in the 'YEN-Brazil advisory group' since Brazil became a lead country to create National Action Plans (NAP) with the support of the YEN. A group of local youth organizations, including YES Brazil, convened soon after the NAP on Youth Employment was submitted to the YEN Secretariat in early March, to formalize a “term of cooperation and joined actions” to implement the NAP.

3. FIVE YOUTH LAUNCH RENEWABLE ENERGY ENTERPRISE
A three-year collaboration between YES and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) has culminated in the launching of five renewable energy businesses created by young entrepreneurs under the age of 30. The five entrepreneurs—three women and two men—won a global competition to become Renewable Energy Fellows and receive training and support to start their micro-enterprises.

4. YES NAGALAND, INDIA LAUNCHES OVER A 2-DAY WORKSHOP
Government and university officials, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and youth leaders met for a workshop in mid-December, 2004 to launch a state-level YES Network in Nagaland, India. The workshop focused on challenges and opportunities facing Nagaland’s 42,000 educated, unemployed youth.

5. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES RELATED TO RENEWABLE ENERGY
The growth of solar technologies is creating a variety of opportunities for youth employment, according to speakers at a Dec. 17th seminar on renewable technologies in Banjara Hills, India. The state consultation, co-sponsored by YES and the Swami Ramananda Tirtha Rural Institute (SRTRI), highlighted the impact and potential of Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) technologies to meet energy needs in rural areas.

6. YES ASSISTS THE UNITED NATIONS IN EAST AFRICA
YES Headquarters staff, Kenroy Roach and Regina Skerjanec skillfully assisted the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in planning and facilitating its first ever Youth Working Group. Through the efforts of YES Headquarters (YES HQ), the YES Country Networks of Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Uganda and Kenya were able to participate in the meeting through the generous support of UNECA.  The Government of Rwanda hosted the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts Meeting convened by UNECA.  Gathering under the theme of “Enhancing Youth Employment Prospects in East Africa”, representatives of government and international organizations as well as young people deliberated on some of the key employment challenges facing East Africa.

7. YES SUPPORTS CELEBRATION OF GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY
Organizations in more than 100 countries have signed up to lead local efforts for Global Youth Service Day 2005 (April 15-17), ensuring that simultaneous, youth-driven community service projects will take place internationally throughout this weekend-long event.

YES CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE MEMBER NAMED PRIME MINISTER OF NAMIBIA

The Youth Employment Summit (YES) Campaign is pleased to announce that a distinguished Campaign Committee member, the Hon. Nahas Angula, formerly the Minister of Higher Education, Training and Employment Creation, has been appointed the new Prime Minister of Namibia.

"The YES Campaign is excited that the youth of Namibia will have a stronger voice thanks to the appointment of the Hon. Nahas Angula," said Poonam Ahluwalia, Executive Director of the YES Campaign "The YES Campaign looks forward to continuing to work with Mr. Angula in his new role, as he continues to advocate for youth issues not only in Namibia, but across the world," she said.
