YES Assists the United Nations in East Africa
YES Headquarters staff, Kenroy Roach and Regina Skerjanec skillfully assisted the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in planning and facilitating its first ever Youth Working Group. Through the efforts of YES Headquarters (YES HQ), the YES Country Networks of Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Uganda and Kenya were able to participate in the meeting through the generous support of UNECA. The Government of Rwanda hosted the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts Meeting convened by UNECA. Gathering under the theme of “Enhancing Youth Employment Prospects in East Africa”, representatives of government and international organizations as well as young people deliberated on some of the key employment challenges facing East Africa.
Specific working sessions on Youth Employment, Post Conflict Reconstruction, HIV/AIDS and Youth Employment were held. These themes hold special relevance for many East African countries. The outcomes of the meeting prioritizes the development of a regional advocacy program on youth and agriculture, the development of eco-entrepreneurship programs, a capacity building program for the Department's of Labor and Youth, a youth career guidance program, setting up of support centers for young ex-combatants, an HIV/AIDS and Livelihoods youth training program and a Young Small Business Entrepreneurs Network.
YES supports youth policy and program initiatives across the globe particularly as it relates to youth employment. The involvement of YES in planning and facilitating this meeting is a testament to this. UNECA has agreed that the outcomes of this meeting will serve as its working program for youth over the next year. YES will provide technical assistance to this work program.
