Employment Opportunties Related to Renewable Energy

YES Co-Sponsors Seminar with Rural Institute in Banjara Hills, India

The growth of solar technologies is creating a variety of opportunities for youth employment, according to speakers at a Dec. 17th seminar on renewable technologies in Banjara Hills, India. The state consultation, co-sponsored by YES and the Swami Ramananda Tirtha Rural Institute (SRTRI), highlighted the impact and potential of Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) technologies to meet energy needs in rural areas.

SPV devices, which convert sunlight to electricity, can be used to supply power to heating systems, cooking equipment, and food processing. Though the technologies have proven effective, there is a growing need for trained technicians who can keep the SPV devices running.

Participants at the seminar developed plans to create a training program and curriculum to enable youth at various skill levels to establish service centers to maintain SPV devices. The training program could also prepare youth  for careers in the manufacturing of these devices; manufacturers have expressed concerns about a lack of trained workers.

UNIDO is providing funds to establish lab facilities and infrastructure for the training program.
