Innovation Market Place

The 3rd Global Youth Employment Summit held from the 13th to the 16th September 2006 at Nairobi KICC Kenya. The innovation Market Place at the summit allowed YES Country Networks, Youth Entrepreneurs, Governments, Businesses, NGO's, and Foundations, International development agencies, civic society and Youth Leaders to showcase their innovations for promoting Youth Employment. .

The exhibitors displayed their best practices, programs, products and literature in the field of Youth Employment to a wide and diverse global audience from over 100 countries and of over 2000 delegates.

Objectives of the Innovation Market Place

  • Provided an opportunity to the young people budding entrepreneurs and youth innovators in employment generation to showcase their unique enterprise ideas, products and services
  • Provided an opportunity to the YES Country Network members across 45 countries to demonstrate their country action plans and success stories in employment creation and wealth generation by youth in their local communities
  • Enabled the development partners to showcase their innovative Youth Employment programmes and effective practices

The sectors that had been identified as key development needs and presented tremendous opportunities for the gainful employment and entrepreneurship of young people include:

1. Information and communication Technology (ICT) Expanding access to ICTs as a tool for education and business development and employing ICT's as a means of livelihood.

2. HIV and AIDS Addressing livelihood generation within the context of HIV and AIDS in order to strengthen youth friendly HIV/AIDS and reproductive health services, mitigate the spread to infections, increase opportunities for youth living with HIV/AIDS and improve the reproductive health and family choices of women

3. Renewable Energy Facilitating and supporting the involvement of youth as entrepreneurs, service providers and maintenance operators in the renewable energy sector to address the energy needs of communities

4. Rural Development (on/off farm) Equipping youth with the appropriate skills suited to the rural labour market including training in innovations in agro -business, access to micro credit and the skills necessary to analyze and address community needs

5. Water and Sanitation Integrating youth livelihood opportunities in the community resource management process to improve the availability and supply of clean drinking water, sanitation services and improve environmental condition.
